Young, determined, and brimming with promise, Marium Fatima has etched her name into the history books by becoming the first Woman FIDE Master (WFM) from Bihar, a landmark achievement for the region’s chess community. Born in 2006, she has steadily climbed the ranks to a standard rating of 2083, and has shown remarkable strength in Rapid and Blitz formats as well.

Marium’s journey is one of quiet grit. In a state where chess infrastructure and formal coaching were historically limited, she relied on early support—often from her family—to discover the game. As she honed her talent, she balanced education with relentless practice, sharpening her tactics through local tournaments and online study when there was no coach nearby. Her progress from a young aspirant to WFM in 2025 signifies not just her individual brilliance but a larger story: that excellence in chess is possible even from regions without a long-standing ecosystem of elite training.

Shahid, founder and trainer at Champaran Chess Academy, noted: “Marium’s rise is a watershed moment for Bihar. She has shown that with determination and the right opportunities, players from any corner of India can achieve international recognition. Her games reflect both creativity and resilience, qualities that will inspire many young girls to pick up chess in the state.”

Sanjeet Saurav, director and founder of Queens Gambit Chess Academy, added: “Bihar has been waiting for a breakthrough like this. Marium becoming a WFM is not just her personal victory—it is a call to action. If we can channel proper coaching, regular rated tournaments, and government support, Bihar has the potential to produce many more players of her caliber.”

For Marium, the WFM title is not the destination but the beginning of a bigger journey. She now serves as a beacon for girls across Bihar—proof that gender doesn’t limit pursuit, and geography doesn’t cap ambition. For the state, her achievement is a reminder that with sustained investment and community effort, the future of chess in Bihar looks brighter than ever.
